April O'Neil is a reporter for Channel 6 news in New York who has been researching a gang called the Foot Clan which has been terrorizing the city. She questions a dock worker about shipments of chemicals that may be linked to the Foot Clan. April eventually learns that something is being brought in by the docks. That night, she returns and sees the Foot Clan unloading cargo. April tries to record footage using her phone, but a shadowy figure arrives and takes out the Foot Soldiers one by one. She tells her coworkers and her boss Bernadette Thompson, but no one believes her story.

The Foot Clan next attacks a subway station. April rushes to the scene, hoping to encounter the vigilante or find evidence confirming his existence. She sees four figures this time, who disappear after defeating the Foot Clan. She follows them to a rooftop and tries to photograph them. The Turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphaelnotice her and delete the camera's images, warning her not to divulge their existence. She asks them who they are as they leave, and they say, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

Dans un futur proche, l'armée américaine a développé ce qui est appelé le « rêve partagé », une méthode permettant d'influencer l'inconscient d'une victime pendant qu'elle rêve. Des « extracteurs » s'immiscent alors dans ce rêve, qu'ils ont préalablement modelé et qu'ils peuvent contrôler, afin d'y voler des informations sensibles stockées dans le subconscient de la cible. C'est dans cette nouvelle technique que se sont lancés Dominic Cobb et sa femme, Mal. Ensemble, ils ont exploré les possibilités de cette technique et l'ont améliorée, leur permettant d'emboîter les rêves les uns dans les autres, accentuant la confusion et donc diminuant la méfiance de la victime. Mais l'implication du couple dans ce projet a été telle que Mal a un jour perdu le sens de la réalité ; pensant être en train de rêver, elle s'est suicidée, pensant alors revenir dans ce qu'elle croyait être sa réalité. Soupçonné de son meurtre, Cobb est contraint de fuir les États-Unis et d'abandonner leurs enfants à ses beaux-parents. Il se spécialise dans l'« extraction », en particulier dans le domaine de l'espionnage industriel ; mercenaire et voleur, il est embauché par des multinationales pour obtenir des informations de leurs concurrents commerciaux.
